Jonathan Mawhinney Undergoes Knee Surgery, Bringing 2026 Racing Season to an Early End

Unfortunately, we got the news we were hoping to avoid.

Jonathan underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee and will now begin what is expected to be a four-month recovery. He’ll be in a brace and non-weight-bearing for the next four to six weeks.

That means Jonathan’s 2026 racing season has most likely come to an early end.

It’s a tough way to finish what had been a great year for Mawhinney Motorsports. Jonathan will miss the IMCA Super Nationals, a potential opportunity to compete in the All-Star race, the chance to see and race alongside so many of our Iowa friends, and the November shows in Arizona.

The injury will also likely cost us a shot at the Arizona State Championship. After building a strong points lead throughout the season, Jonathan was in a position where simply starting the next couple of races would have gone a long way toward securing the championship.

That one hurts.

But racing has a way of reminding you that not everything goes according to plan. Jonathan is looking at the adversity with perspective and focusing now on doing the work necessary to recover and hopefully get back behind the wheel in January.

Even though the season ended earlier than anyone wanted, there’s still plenty to be proud of. It was a great year with wins, some incredible weekends at the track, and a lot of memories made along the way.

Jonathan and the entire Mawhinney Motorsports team want to thank everyone who has called, texted or reached out with support. A special thank you goes to his wife Jamie, his dad Matt, his mom and aunt for helping him through what will be a long recovery, as well as everyone at Performer Chassis and Precision Performance Racing Suspensions who have become like family.

Now it’s time to heal.

We’ll keep everyone updated on Jonathan’s recovery and, hopefully, the road back to racing in 2027.
